Play Rehab for the Serious Professional

“The opposite of play isn’t work, it’s depression.”         – Brian Sutton-Smith

We’ve been raised to think of play as a frivolous pastime, something we do after the serious business is done. Meanwhile, we drive ourselves into the ground to achieve enough so that one day we can finally play. Hopefully before we die. Life has shifted from being a Playground to a Proving Ground.

Not only is this making us miserable, damaging our bodies, hurting our relationships, and crushing our souls, it’s also a serious obstacle to our success. We are at our best – our smartest, most creative, most collaborative, and most agile – when we’re playing. In short, it pays to play!

But even if we recognize the value of play, it’s not easy to leave the proving ground. Most of us are addicted to busyness. We’re afraid we’ll lose our competitive edge if we stop. In fact, we’re not even sure we remember how.

The Playful Path is play rehab for professionals who realize that play is vital to our success and want to unleash our playful spirit at work.

A little more about Gwen

Gwen is an Emmy Award-winning creative director who started her career building Muppets for Sesame Street. She left the “street” to design furry play-stations at the MIT Media Lab then founded Creatures at Large, a children’s multimedia production company. Gwen earned a masters degree in philosophy and became a pioneer in the field of adult play, teaching and publishing widely on the subject. She has applied her insights to the design of programs for companies including IDEO and PepsiCo, groups ranging from life coaches to TSA security officers, and for several popular films. She has been an artist-in-residence in settings ranging from Xerox PARC to San Quentin Prison and recently received a MacArthur Foundation grant for a PBS special about play. She currently blogs for Huffington Post and carries Free Hug signs wherever she goes.

“Gwen takes you where you are and can work on many different levels – personal, spiritual & professional. Whatever my block, she always has just the right process. I am much more on track now, but am not ready to give up her insights just yet!”

“Working with Gwen is a delight and has helped me develop greater playful presence and sense of freedom in my life. I would recommend her to anyone interested in developing those qualities!”
Y. Amram

Former CEO

“I love working with Gwen. She’s compassionate, insightful, and she makes me laugh when I’m taking myself too seriously. She’s had a big impact by being gently persistent with me on the issues that I do/but I don’t really want to work on.”
